"The only thing stopping Annabelle from going to Duke is a certified check for $600,000.00 as a deposit for the transplant. I am very sad right now and the tears will not stop rolling when I look at and think of little Annabelle. Money stands in the way of Annabelle’s treatment to save her life. We live in America and why can’t Annabelle be given a chance to live. We are all working very hard to raise the money to save her." --excerpt from Christine Barrietua's online journal about Annabelle |
| Annabelle has only one chance against this deadly disease: Dr Kurtzburg at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina has accepted Annabelle to have a life saving cord blood transplant. Cells harvested from umbilical cord blood, donated by a mother after giving birth, can provide the gene that will help Annabelle produce the missing enzyme. Duke has performed 11 of these transplants over the last 2 1/2 years on Sanfilippo patients and they are encouraged by the results. The first 2 patients transplanted are now 24 and 27 months post transplant and have demonstrated marked improvement and no signs of Sanfilippo. Duke has found the corrected enzyme in every cell of the body including the brain. The family needs to raise an estimated $650,000 before Annabelle can go to Duke University for the transplant. A major campaign began on November 4th to raise those funds. Volunteers are working in conjunction with COTA (Children’s Organ Transplant Association), a national organization dedicated to helping raise funds for transplants. They provide training, matching funds, and they are a non-profit organization, which means that your donations are tax deductible. One hundred percent of all funds raised will be used for Annabelle’s transplant-related expenses. Your help is urgently needed. Annabelle needs to have this transplant immediately (1 to 2 months), before irreversible damage occurs to her brain and body. We would love to have you, your friends, family and organizations help us to SAVE Annabelle!
