NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF HEALTH News Release (Oct. 3, 1996)
NHLBI Cord Blood Transplantation Study Begins
http://www.nih.gov/news/pr/oct96/nhlbi-03.htm

The first multicenter study of umbilical cord blood transplants from
unrelated, newborn donors was announced today by the National Heart,
Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health.
The 5-year, $30 million study is designed to show whether cord blood
transplantation is a safe and effective alternative to bone marrow
transplantation for children and adults with a variety of cancers, blood
diseases, and genetic disorders.

The hematopoietic progenitor cells in umbilical cord blood were only
discovered in the 1980's, but this relatively new source of stem cells
is already proving to be a powerful addition to medical therapies. Human
umbilical cord blood has proven to be a suitable source of hematopoietic
stem cells After 2,000 transplants world wide, many researcher now believe that
cord blood stem cells are most likely to yield the fastest results both
in research and in patient care, and may have the largest clinical
benefit.

Cord Blood Stem Cell Act of 2003'Legislation Passed Congress
S1717 and HR 2852 Creates a National Cord Blood Stem Cell Bank Program
http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/040123/sff021_1.html
"The federal financing of this large inventory of cord blood stem cell
units creates a national treasure and completes the evolution of this
unique cell therapy from pure research to routine clinical practice. The
goal of the authorizing legislation is to collect, over five (5) years,
an inventory of 150,000 cord blood stem cell units to provide life
saving stem cell transplant for the thousands of patients each year who
need them and cannot currently get them from the "walking donor" bone
marrow registries (as disclosed in the GAO Report, October 2002). This
program, estimated to cost $150 million, will be administered by Health
Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)
